How to store your Christmas Lights

How to store your Christmas Lights

If not stored correctly, Christmas lights can become tangled and damaged, leading to frustration when it’s time to decorate next year. Proper storage of your Christmas lights not only extends their lifespan but also makes decorating easier and stress-free. Here are some tips to ensure your lights stay in top condition year after year:

Remove Your Lights with Care

Taking down your Christmas lights properly is just as important as putting them up. Here’s why:

  • Prolong Their Lifespan: Removing lights prevents unnecessary wear and tear, especially for trees.
  • Protect Growing Trees: Trees grow over time, and leaving lights on year-round can cause them to get swallowed by the bark or break under tension.

For long-term tree installations, consider stretch string mini-lights. They’re durable and designed to withstand multi-season use without compromising tree health.

Wrap Lights Into Coils or Balls

Nothing ruins your holiday cheer faster than a tangled mess of lights. Follow these steps to keep your lights organized:

  1. Unplug and Disconnect: Separate strings to prevent tangling.
  2. Coil or Ball Up the Lights: Wrap them as you would an electrical cord, or ball up smaller sets. Secure them with twine to hold their shape.

Label Your Lights

Labeling your lights can save you hours of guesswork next season.

  • Use masking tape or electrical tape and a marker to identify where each light string was installed (e.g., "Roofline," "Tree Canopy").
  • Take photos of your setup before removal and add notes using a photo editor for future reference.

Store in Breathable, Labeled Containers

Proper storage containers protect your lights from damage and moisture.

  • Use stackable totes with small ventilation holes to prevent trapped moisture. A simple circular saw drill bit can easily add these holes.
  • Keep the lights in a cool, dry location, like a basement or closet.
  • Label each container with the length and type of lights inside for quick identification.
